External Lighting
Taking artificial light outdoors serves 3 main purposes, safety,
security and architectural. Examples of which include;
- Lighting steps and walkways via a Photocell switch for example
allows them to be safely negotiated at night or in periods of
low light.
- Floodlighting a Car Parking area using a Passive Infra-Red switch
allows the drivers and their passengers to reach their vehicles
easily, as well as deterring would be thieves.
- Illuminating the facade of a building and/or its grounds can
enhance its appearance as well as its security, as few thieves
find working "in the spotlight" a good career move.
External Lighting can be fitted as a "stand alone" installation
or incorporated into an overall scheme of external design, such
as landscaping.
Whichever form of Exterior lighting is used, from backlit signage
to floodlighting, it is essential for it to be maintained at regular
intervals.
If for example, you have a Retail outlet with a backlit signboard
on the front elevation, the visual consequences of the "strobing"
effect of failing fluorescents or the uneven light caused by failed
lamps can detract from the overall impact of this "free"
advertising opportunity.
External Lighting is often a by a single or a limited number of
fittings, therefore, unlike interior lighting schemes, the failure
of just one lamp can be obvious, if not hazardous! (see Technical)
If you are considering having Exterior Lighting fitted, it is necessary
to take into account its intended use, and its future maintainability.
For example Floodlighting for its security effect needs to be instant,
it would not deter many would be thieves if the lamp itself needs
a 5minute warm up period, while Floodlighting for its safety effect
of architectural effect, would benefit from utilzing energy efficient
lamps. These lamps not only provide cost effective light but also
have a long life, keeping running and maintenance costs at a minimum.
